Robert J. Becerra, B.C.S., Principal Of Becerra Law, P.A., Was A Member Of The Panel Entitled The “Seafood Import Monitoring Program”, At The Seafood Expo North America Conference

The Seafood Expo North America Conference took place at the Boston Exhibition and Convention Center in Boston from March 11-13, 2018.

Becerra’s session focused on the new NOAA Seafood Import Monitoring Program enforced as of January 1, 2018.
The new Program establishes permitting, reporting and recordkeeping procedures related to the importation of fish and fish products which are considered at risk of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing or seafood fraud. For the first time, the U.S. Government has a comprehensive and enforceable “Seafood Traceability Program” which apply to a variety of seafood such as cod, crab, mahi mahi, swordfish, and tuna. The Program requires importers of seafood to provide and report key data, from the point of harvest to the point of entry into the United States, to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Failure to follow these new seafood import requirements may result in either civil monetary penalties or criminal prosecution against individuals and companies.

Becerra’s law practice focuses on criminal and civil litigation involving international trade, including, among other areas, the enforcement of the laws and regulations governing the import of seafood into the United States. Becerra is a Florida Bar Board Certified expert in International Law.
